MY CURRENT BINGE-WORTHY TV SHOWS

Hey hey hey! It's Sunday again and I've thankfully not been hit with the Sunday Blues...yet, let's hope that doesn't kick in anytime soon. The highlight of my week has to be getting my hair chopped yesterday, my head feels so light, my hair feels swishy, and I'm so ready to finally get my hair coloured in a few weeks. It's the little things we take for granted isn't it?

To pass the time on my extra days off from work, I've found myself watching a ridiculous amount of television - whether it's for background purposes, dinnertime viewing or I'm gonna lie here and pretend I don't have a million and one things to do level of procrastination - it's my kinda thing.

If you're looking for ways to unwind in your free time, I've got a little binge-watch TV list for you based on my current faves, or ones I think are perfect for losing all sense of time on.

CARDINAL

Summary: Detectives John Cardinal and Lise Delorme investigate the evils of Algonquin Bay and face the threats to their own life and families in an attempt to save themselves. In a race against the clock, Cardinal does whatever it takes to take down the killer.

For fans of: The Tunnel, The Killing, Marcella

My comment: It’s quite a quick mover this series, and a fast grower for my attention! I was hooked pretty early on, and each series follows a different storyline but all centred around my new fave detectives, Cardinal & Delorme. The leads are such likeable characters, there’s a touch of double crossing but also teamwork at its finest. Be prepared to get emotionally attached, angry and damn stressed out.

RECTIFY

Summary: After being imprisoned on death row for 19 years for allegedly assaulting and murdering his teenage girlfriend, Daniel Holden is released following fresh DNA evidence that has his conviction overturned. Life on the inside isn’t easy, but nor is life on the outside.

For fans of: Bloodline, Reckoning

My comment: I really cannot recommend this series enough. I shelved it after a few episodes with the intention to go back to it shortly after, and then naturally forgot all about it until I rediscovered it again, and then of course binge watched it in about a week and a half. It’s a quiet and slow paced series, but you can feel yourself fully immersing in Daniel’s world, empathising with both him and his family, and feeling grief, anger, frustration and happiness through his journey in life after prison.

SUPERNATURAL

Summary: After a traumatic event in their early childhood, brothers Sam and Dean Winchester live on the road with their father to eliminate monsters, demons and supernatural beings on the journey to revenge and beyond. Post-adolescence and family feuds, the brothers reunite to finish what they started.

For fans of: The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

My comment: I’ve made no secret about how much I love this series, and although I watched it all last year, the untimely break in the final season - due to the pandemic - caused me to start the show right from the beginning and re-watch it all again. I definitely remember watching Season 2 in about 2 days and rapidly powered through the rest, I started in late May last year and was perhaps on season 9 sometime in August, I couldn’t help myself! However, if you plan to start this, buckle up because it’s 15 seasons long!

THE SINNER

Summary: Detective Harry Ambrose investigates various atrocious murder cases and tries to analyse the reasons behind ordinary people committing heinous crimes.

For fans of: Mindhunter, True Detective

My comment: The first two seasons incredible. I wasn’t wholly convinced to begin with but I’m not one to back away from a show, but by the end of the first episode I was so captivated and taken by it that we binged it super quick! You may have your reservations about detective Harry Ambrose to begin with (I sure did and spent the whole first season really uninterested in him and his story) but persevere, you end up rooting and cheering him on shortly after. The third season was a little bit of let down in my personal opinion which hurt because I so desperately wanted to love it even for the sake of Matt Bomer (who was so good in it) but the shows ‘redemption arc’ theme sort of fell short.

ONE TREE HILL

Summary: The trials and tribulations of two half-brothers dealing with high school, romance, their love of basketball and a town with many secrets.

For fans of: Dawson’s Creek, Friday Night Lights, The O.C.

My comment: I’ve been watching OTH on and off for years, catching re-runs on telly, binge-watching the first 2 seasons on DVD umpteen times, but I’ve never completed the full run. The time has now come though for me to start again, I’m so excited piecing bits together that I didn’t remember or couldn’t make heads nor tails of, and there’s something so comporting about watching it, it’s like watching The O.C. or Gossip Girl, no matter how many times I see it, it’s like a hot cup of tea and cosy blanket.

NORMAL PEOPLE

Summary: The coming of age tale of Marianne and Connell, two people growing up with different backgrounds in the same small Irish town. Their lives weave and entangle from teenagers to adults, romantically drawn together no matter the cost.

For fans of: Looking for Alaska, Easy, The Affair, Any young BBC 3 drama

My comment: To be honest, I don’t really get all the hype surrounding this show, I definitely feel it was a bit unwarranted. With that being said, I did still enjoy it (when Marianne wasn’t whinging and whining) and it’s definitely a binge-worthy show! Connell is just a bonus treat.

DARK ANGEL

Summary: Set in post-apocalyptic Seattle in 2019, genetically enhanced super-solider Max Guevara, tries to live a normal life after escaping the military facility she was raised in. The government has eyes everywhere, searching for the escapees, but Max just wants to find her brothers and sisters and take down those who wronged her.

For fans of: Almost Human, Heroes, Smallville

My comment: The first time I watched this, I wasn’t sure if it was really my kinda thing, but I persevered for the sake of being able to follow the episodes that Jensen Ackles was in. A few episodes in, I got so hooked on it and fascinated by the concept - and the shows view on a dystopian 2019 world filmed in the late 90’s - that I couldn’t stop myself from pressing play on episode after episode.

A few other notable series to watch: Defending Jacob, Gilmore Girls, The O.C., White Collar, Graceland

Naturally, I'm always on the hunt for new (and old) shows to have a little binge on so what are your favourites? What are your go-to's? The last couple of weekends I started Buzzfeed Unsolved, Agents of SHIELD, and watched waaaaay too much Supernatural (actually, that's not possible!) and Bloodline!

Currently watching: Bloodline
