It was around 2011 when I first fell in love with Awards season, the pretty dresses, eye catching jewellery and gongs that many had dreamed of. I was in awe of virtually every star and hopelessly seeking out any Glee cast member I could. Please interview Darren Criss, Ryan Seacrest. Maybe it was the fact I was painfully obsessed with Glee and was desperate to see what their hottest actresses were wearing, or maybe it was my unhealthy addiction to watching E! 24/7. Either way, I was hooked and re-lived that post-christmas feeling all over again once the season ended.
It seems that as the years progressed, my love didn't falter any, and I'm just as excited this time around! The first Awards show to grace the January blues, although Giuliana Rancic complained of nearly being sunburnt in Beverly Hills, is the Golden Globes.
I have just finished watching the 2 hours Red Carpet special, (don't judge me, I've been ill and only saw half of it) and it would appear that I had more in my Best Dressed category than I first thought. I'm also so thrilled that there were a few pops of coloured in there!
Best Dressed
(L-R)
Amy Poehler, Caitlin Fitzgerald, Emma Thompson, Julie Bowen, Drew Barrymore, Lupita Nyong'o, Michelle Dockery, Zooey Deschanel, Taylor Swift, Olivia Wilde
At first glance at Poehler's sleek black Stella McCartney dress, I wasn't phased, merely writing it off as another pretty red carpet outfit. However, when I later started to compile my categories, I saw some snappy worthy images of one of the evening's host, and wondered how I wasn't drawn in sooner. With the simple cut shoulder line, triangular sliced middle and wide yet understated belt, she looks truly stunning in a simple and classic way.
Whilst I had no idea who Caitlin Fitzgerald was and sadly she wasn't shown on E!'s red carpet show, I found this image and immediately fell in love with her Emilia Wickstead pale blue full asymmetrical dress. It's simply stunning and classic with its full top.
I'm truly in awe of how incredible Emma Thompson looked, the 54-year old British actress worked that golden long sleeved topped dress like a golden globe herself. Words cannot express how impressed I was with her outfits (and that hair!)
Modern Family's leading mother Julie Bowen had me in a one sided debate with myself over exactly how I felt over this Carolina Herrera two-toned colour block dress. My initial reaction was.... what? Sure the style of the actual dress was promising, as was the material mixture, but I wasn't so keen on the combination of the deep-pink-it's-almost-red and rich purple. But the more I look at it, the further in love I fall. In the end, there was no other option than the best dressed category. I promise I'm not biased even though I'm a fair Bowen fan.
The moment I saw this flower embellished Monique Lhuillier maternity number, I was beaming and cooing and fawning over my television set, profusely exclaiming my love to my mum. It's pretty and girly and so simply divine that I didn't know how else to respond to such an outfit. Drew Barrymore absolutely rocked this look and looked positively glowing. Spectacular.
For those like me, who had no idea who Lupita Nyong'o was before the GG Awards, they sure do after she became the most talked about fashionista from the event in this absolutely jaw dropping and boldly exquisite Ralph Lauren gown, complete with attached floor-length cape. Words fail me. BEST. DRESSED. EVER.
Despite the fact I am a very avid Downton Abbey fan and I'm willing to defend the cast for whatever is thrown their way, Michelle Dockery looked beautiful in a mullet hemmed (hi-low) Oscar de la Renta sequined gown.
It's hard adapting an unbiased approach when attempting to write from a neutral standpoint about someone you adore and respect, but I feel that Zooey Deschanel certainly does need a biased opinion on her side when she shows up to an awards show wearing this, quite frankly, adorable Oscar de la Renta ensembled dress, complete with a dazzling embroidered crop top and mullet hem. I really enjoy her cute-sy style. She never disappoints.
When will Taylor Swift wear something that makes me frown? I feel like I've been waiting years to look at her fashion with a look on my face that represents something similar to the taste of a rotten apple, (if you listen close enough, you'll hear my sobs emanating from your computer) but no, it still hasn't happened. Of course, this red and black strapless Carolina Herrera gown proves my point further. You've done it again Taylor.
Who says your dress has to be smock like and flowing when you're five months pregnant? Olivia Wilde sure doesn't think so in this glitzy emerald green Gucci sequined gown. Olivia proves you can still look amazing at an awards show with a tiny little one growing inside of you. Or maybe it's because she's so flawlessly slim everywhere else!
Worst Dressed
(L-R)
Heidi Klum, Edie Falco, Hayden Panettiere, Jennifer Lawrence, Julia Roberts, Lena Dunham, Sandra Bullock, Zoe Saldana
Picking my worst dressed proved a harder task than I originally anticipated but then I found some corkers and began to feel partially embarrassed for these starlets. It's okay girls, it happens to the best of us.
My first victim is Heidi Klum, I wouldn't call this Marchesa dress overly bad, but I feel this sheer floral dress looks a little more like an overdressed nightgown as opposed to something one would wear for the GG. I wasn't overly wowed. Maybe a different event could have accommodated this dress?
I adore Edie Falco in Nurse Jackie, a television show that I would highly recommend, but I feel that this dress was all sorts of wrong. It has potential but that oversized bow completely overpowers the gown and I feel like she should have been unwrapped back in December when the festive period was still prominent. Sadly this Lanvin dress was a disappointment.
What was Hayden Panettiere thinking? Whilst I don't mind the dress terribly from the waistline, am I the only one who thinks the top half of her looks like she going to hang out at the beach for the day? It looks too dressed-up-casual. Apparently Hayden was so desperate to wear a Tom Ford dress that she bought this straight off the rack because the designer had already dressed Naomi Watts (Ford is particular about dressing one woman per awards show!). It really wasn't worth the $10,000 price tag.
Jennifer Lawrence is one of the biggest actresses of the now, and with the spotlight constantly on her, there must be major pressure for her to dress right for every occasion. Unfortunately this Dior dress is one of the biggest fashion faux-pars since I can remember. I hate to say this, but it looks like J-Law stayed up all night prior to the awards slaving over her sewing machine to create something out there.
I find it hard to say a bad word when it come to Julia Roberts but I think I can muster up some regarding her dress choice for this event. The actually dress segment was fine, elegant and fitting, however what is with the shirt? It felt more like work-chic in which the dress was a little too long. This Dolce & Gabbana creation was definitely a no-go.
Lena Dunham, one word springs to mind. WHY?!?! This canary yellow Zac Posen strapless definitely turned a few heads, but for the wrong reason perhaps? Whilst it is definitely one of the better dresses we have seen her donning, it doesn't really say much for her choice does it?
I'm beginning to wonder when Bertie Bassett became a trendsetter and influenced Sandra Bullock. This Prabal Gurung mullet hemmed gown would have worked so much better had the colour pop been consistent, but the mix of the two alongside the black was a really poor decision.
Another Prabal Gurung dress hit the red carpet but Zoe Saldana was the victim this time. This clash-of-print mini looked awkward, unflattering and every kind of wrong. I literally do not have a good word to say about this so perhaps I should leave it there. This has to be my Worst Dressed of the evening.
E! Presenters
(L-R)
Giuliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne
After opening this post with a gushing reference on E!, it only seemed appropriate that I discussed to of their finest reporting ladies. Giuliana Rancic nearly always looks flawless in my eyes which her fashion diversity and beaming smile, I can't help but adore her. At first I was surprised by this floor length ballerina-esque gown because it's unlike what we usually see her in, but this plum Lorena Sarbu dress looked stunning on the presenter and I personally think this is one of her strongest looks ever.
It's no secret that I love love love Kelly Osbourne, but I was a little disappointed in her appearance at first glance. However, after looking at pictures post-the event, I'm suddenly a fan of her L'Oreal slicked back hair and Escada black gown with front slit and gold flowered shoulder embellishments. Osbourne chalks up flawless again.
So that's my lengthy round up of this years Golden Globe Awards.
